WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR SOCIETY'S IRRESPONSIBILITY? THE GANG

So many of our problems would disappear if society held the individual responsible for his or her own actions.

But our whole civilization's structure is built on the collective - the group, the political party, the company, the union, the corporation, the board of governors, the parole board, the school board, the committee, the church, the fraternity, the brotherhood, the armed forces, police forces - always the collective. The Gang.

In that way, the individual may commit all sorts of crimes and abuses with relative impunity and even walk away with a fat bonus to boot. The group protects the worst offenders because each individual within the group gets to hide behind the power of the collective. How far would Hitler have gone without the collective - without the obedient, agreeable, supportive masses ?

The head of British Petroleum, responsible for the worst oil spill in industrial history gets to resign and is rewarded with millions of dollars for his horrible misdeeds and failures.

No one is held responsible. Everyone suffers unfathomable damage. There are no real consequences for the offenders. A slap on the wrist, perhaps, but, for the most part, the offender is Teflon in our society - slippery - untouchable.

The parole board frees a rapist murderer and the monster kills again. No one is responsible. No individual is punished for setting him free. Each and every one of the members of the board escapes the consequences.

The defence lawyer - like the teacher, the doctor, the nurse or the police officer - good or bad - is accepted as an icon in our society - no matter how he may transgress to defend the criminal. Our law requires the lawyer to do "put up a strong defence". Does anyone ever check to see if he has done it honestly? Not likely. Like incompetent doctors and crooked policemen - the lawyer is protected by the brotherhood - the bar association - the collective. Consequently, the innocent victims and their families suffer irreparable damage.

A police officer helps a young thief to rob and destroy a family, but the local station covers up for him and then the detectives cover up - incriminating fingerprints disappear - and no one is held responsible. The case is closed - even though it was never open. The old true blue line covers up instead of stopping that one officer on the day he committed the crime - October 7, 1996 at 4995 Prince of Wales, NDG, Montreal, Quebec. And the victims of his crime continue to suffer day and night, year after year.

A doctor drags a sick and terrified patient around the emergency room of a major Montreal hospital in front of dozens of witnesses. No one stops him. Then he tells the patient there is nothing wrong with her. He orders her to get into a wheelchair and tells her she will be pushed out to a taxi immediately.

The patient saves her own life by refusing to leave the hospital. With great difficulty, she makes her way to the oncology department and learns almost immediately that she has bone cancer.

The patient reports these events to the hospital's complaints commissioner. And, as expected, the chief of staff covers up, as he always does.

This is what happens when no individual is held responsible for his or her mistakes, abuses or crimes. The collective supports and guarantees abuse because there are no consequences for the individual. The individual culprit lives in the cocoon of the collective.

The collective covers up the misdeeds of the lowest, the most irresponsible, the most incompetent and the most evil members of society. The whole structure of our society is riddled with rot because we do not hold the individual responsible.

Our society is in terrible trouble because no one holds the delinquent individual responsible. Why should they? Once in a position of power, each individual is out to save his own seat. It would take a person of noble character, intelligence, and substance - a moral, ethical person - to reach a position of power and then risk personal loss to change things for the sake of us all.

Where, oh where, are the heroes ?

A PRIVATE VISIT WITH JOHN DIEFENBAKER

The Right Honourable
John Diefenbaker
PC, CH, QC
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Diefmontreal.jpg
13th Prime Minister of Canada
In office
June 21, 1957 – April 22, 1963

John George Diefenbaker, PC, CH, QC (September 18, 1895 – August 16, 1979) led Canada as its 13th Prime Minister, serving from June 21, 1957, to April 22, 1963. He was the only Progressive Conservative (PC, or Tory) party leader between 1930 and 1979 to lead the party to an election victory, doing so three times, although only once with a majority of the seats in the Canadian House of Commons. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

HUFFINGTON POST
September 27, 2011

http://www.thecanadianpress.com/

OTTAWA - Canada used its United Nations speaking slot Monday to lambaste opponents of Israel as no better than the appeasers who allowed fascism and communism to flourish before the Second World War.

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird delivered Canada's views to the General Assembly in a speech that put meat on the bones of the Harper government's unflinching support of Israel.

"Just as fascism and communism were the great struggles of previous generations, terrorism is the great struggle of ours. And far too often, the Jewish state is on the front line of our struggle and its people the victims of terror," says a prepared text of Baird's remarks.

"Canada will not accept or stay silent while the Jewish state is attacked for defending its territory and its citizens. The Second World War taught us all the tragic price of 'going along' just to 'get along.' " ....

On Valentines Day in the late 1960's, I had a private meeting with the then leader of the Canadian Opposition, John Diefenbaker, in his office across the street from the Houses of Parliamemt.

Mr. Diefenbaker wanted to know why I supported the Liberals.

What have the Liberals ever done for Israel ?

I told him that if he were running for the office of Prime Minister, I would have voted for him, but I could not vote for Robert Stanfield.

All these decades later, it is still the Conservatives who speak up for Israel.

Where are the Liberals today ?

WHERE IS SOLOMON NOW ?

Mahmoud Abbas told the United Nations today that his land is the only occupied territory in the world. Huh ?

Without getting into the endless debate about Israel's right to survive, has Abbas not noticed that China has taken Tibet and still claims Taiwan?

And shall we speak about Korea ?

And, if I remember correctly, wasn't Ethiopia taken apart to create Eritrea?

And the First Nations People of Canada still have claims against the colonialists - Woops ! That's me,  I guess. My family has only lived in Canada for about a hundred years.

I don't own three square inches of land, but I am really happy to live here anyway - in peace with my neighbours.

It's hard to keep up with world event, but somehow Abbas' claim doesn't ring true to me.

One day two women came to King Solomon and one of them said: Your Majesty, this woman and I live in the same house. Not long ago my baby was born at home, and three days later her baby was born. Nobody else was there with us.

One night while we were all asleep, she rolled over on her baby, and he died. Then while I was still asleep, she got up and took my son out of my bed. She put him in her bed, then she put her dead baby next to me.

In the morning when I got up to feed my son, I saw that he was dead. But when I looked at him in the light, I knew he wasn't my son.

"No!" the other woman shouted. "He was your son. My baby is alive!"
"The dead baby is yours," the first woman yelled. "Mine is alive!"

They argued back and forth in front of Solomon, until finally he said, "Both of you say this live baby is yours.  Someone bring me a sword."

A sword was brought, and Solomon ordered, "Cut the baby in half! That way each of you can have part of him."

" Please don't kill my son," the baby's mother screamed. "Your Majesty, I love him very much, but give him to her. Just don't kill him."

The other woman shouted, "Go ahead and cut him in half. Then neither of us will have the baby."

Solomon said, "Don't kill the baby." Then he pointed to the first woman, "She is his real mother. Give the baby to her."

Everyone in Israel was amazed when they heard how Solomon had made his decision. They realized that God had given him wisdom to judge fairly.

MORE THAN 20,000 PEOPLE EXPELLED FROM THEIR HOMES

Sven Torfinn for The New York Times

An evicted woman showed proof

of her family's land ownership

More than 20,000 people were expelled from their homes, a report says.

By Josh Kron

KICUCULA, Uganda — According to the company's proposal to join a United Nations clean-air program, the settlers living in this area left in a "peaceful" and "voluntary" manner. .

People here remember it quite differently.

"I heard people being beaten, so I ran outside," said Emmanuel Cyicyima, 33. "The houses were being burnt down."

Other villagers described gun-toting soldiers and an 8-year-old child burning to death when his home was set ablaze by security officers.

"They said if we hesitated they would shoot us," said William Bakeshisha, adding that he hid in his coffee plantation, watching his house burn down. "Smoke and fire."

According to a report released by the aid group Oxfam on Wednesday, the Ugandan government and a British forestry company forcibly expelled more than 20,000 people from their homes here in recent years, emblematic of a global scramble for arable land.

"Too many investments have resulted in dispossession, deception, violation of human rights and destruction of livelihoods," Oxfam said in the report. "This interest in land is not something that will pass." As population and urbanization soar, it added, "whatever land there is will surely be prized."

Across Africa, some of the world's poorest people have been thrown off land to make way for foreign investors, often uprooting local farmers so that food can be grown on a commercial scale and shipped to richer countries overseas.

But in this case, the government and the company said the settlers were illegal and evicted for a good cause: to protect the environment and help fight global warming.

The case twists around an emerging multibillion-dollar market trading carbon-credits under the Kyoto Protocol, which contains mechanisms for outsourcing environmental protection to developing nations.

The company involved, New Forests Company, grows forests in African countries with the purpose of selling credits from the carbon-dioxide its trees soak up to polluters abroad. Its investors include the World Bank, through its private investment arm, and the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, HSBC.

In 2005, the Ugandan government granted New Forests a 50-year license to grow pine and eucalyptus forests in three districts, and the company has applied to the United Nations to trade under the mechanism. The company expects that it could earn up to $1.8 million a year.

But there was just one problem: people were living on the land where the company wanted to plant trees. Indeed, they had been there a while.

"He was a policeman for King George," Mr. Bakeshisha said of his father, who served with British forces during World War II in Egypt.

Mr. Bakeshisha, 51, said he was given land in Namwasa forest in Mubende district in 1997 by a local kingdom through his father's serviceman association. Mr. Bakeshisha lived happily on the property for years, becoming a local administrator and ardent supporter of President Yoweri Museveni. In a neighboring district, people had been living on land the company would later license since the 1970s.

Tensions brewed. The company and government said the residents were living illegally in a forest. Residents said they had rights. Community members took the company to court in 2009 and a temporary injunction was issued, barring evictions. Nevertheless, Oxfam and residents say, evictions continued.

Residents were given until Feb. 28, 2010, to vacate company premises while soldiers and the police kept surveillance. Company officials visited, too. From time to time a house would be burnt down, villagers said. Then came Feb. 28, a Sunday.

"We were in church," recalled Jean-Marie Tushabe, 26, a father of two. "I heard bullets being shot into the air."

"Cars were coming with police," Mr. Tushabe said, sitting among the ruins of his old home. "They headed straight to the houses. They took our plates, cups, mattresses, bed, pillows. Then we saw them getting a matchbox out of their pockets."

Homeless and hopeless, Mr. Tushabe said he took a job with the company that pushed him out. He was promised more than $100 each month, he said, but received only about $30.

New Forests says that it takes accusations that settlers were forcibly removed "extremely seriously" and will conduct "an immediate and thorough" investigation.

"Our understanding of these resettlements is that they were legal, voluntary and peaceful and our first hand observations of them confirmed this," the company said in a response to the Oxfam report.

A Ugandan government spokesman said residents in Namwasa were illegal encroachers, but he acknowledged and deplored the use of violence to remove them, saying it was done by corrupt politicians and police officers operating outside the law.

Olivia Mukamperezida, 28, said her house was among the first in her community to be burned down. One day in late 2009, she said, her eldest son, Friday, was sick at home, so she went out to find medicine. Villagers suddenly told her to rush back. Everything was incinerated.

"I found my house when it was completely finished," she said. "I just cried."

Ms. Mukamperezida never found the culprits. She buried Friday's bones in a grave, but says she does not know if it is still there.

"They are planting trees," she said.

75 YEAR OLD MONTREAL JOURNALIST BUYS A USED CAR - DGB AUTO

This is the fourth episode of my adventure in buying a used car. The reader will find the whole story in detailed reports at the blog addresses below.

I purchased the car at DGB Auto at 6965 St. Jacques West in Montreal on Saturday, April 30, 2011.

After trying to get DGB Auto to make essential repairs all summer long - with the car at DGB for days at a time - only to find that the repairs were still not done - I finally gave up this week and took the car into a long-established garage operated for decades by Joe and Ralph and their sons, Emilio and Adriano Colafabio at 4810 Walkley Avenue, Montreal.

The total cost for parts and labour was $623,22.

To replace the exterior door handle on the driver's side. The door could not be opened from the outside. And to repair the inner bracket which had been broken during several failed attempts by DGB - and left broken.

It was a frustrating ordeal to try to get into the low-slung car without being able to open the driver's door. I have had to perform ridiculous acrobatics to get in from the passenger's seat, over the gear box. As a handicapped person, it took a lot of determination to ignore my discomfort and overcome my limitations in order to be able to use the car until I could get the door handle fixed.

The dealer, Mike, kept promising again and again and again, that he would fix the door handle. He vowed he had made it his "personal challenge" to get it done right.  But he never did. I went out of my comfort zone time after time to be patient because Mike and his wife Homa are such pleasant people and Mike suffers from back pain, as do I.

Acrid fumes coming into the car were caused by a bad muffler which had to be replaced, along with an exhaust gasket and cabin air filter so I would not expire at the wheel.

A few light bulbs also had to be replaced in the dashboard so I will be able to see the instrument array.

And so, it appears, that after spending my whole summer chasing after DGB Auto to make these essential repairs, my car should now be safe to operate.

And thus endeth the lesson - I hope.

RONNIE MCKELVIE AND LITTLE HELEN - REMEMBERING

Gone But Not Forgotten

My world has been full of interesting people - the people close to me and those who were strangers. Working with my family at Metropolitan News Agency at The Crossroads of the Nation in Montreal for decades, I was gifted with strangers who came to me from all over the world, and from around the corner, I have written about some of them here on this blog, and the reader can find my memoirs about some of them at  -

But I want to write about so many more. I want to write about my meetings with Lorne Greene, Maurice Chevalier, The Shriners, Mike Mazurki, Frank Sinatra, Queen Elizabeth's chauffeur, Rene Levesque, Joey Smallwood, The Gazette's Fitz Fitzgerald, Marc Pilon, Rollin Van Smythe, the cops on the beat - Kenny Law and Kenny Campbell; Mr. "Curly" (Coyle?) who was the official in charge of the pier at Atlantic City; the three very black men who appeared in our store late one dark afternoon in the middle of winter wearing identical black suits - and no coats or boots; the tall, lean, Swedish man who operated the furnaces in the Dominion Square Building; the woman who was the telephone operator at the Queen's Hotel for decades; Justice of the Peace, Harry (?) Traverse : My father called him "Bicycles" because he had been in that business in the past; Maynard Ferguson's mother, the railway porters, the handsome Metrakos brothers of Diana Grill, Spiro and the rest. And all the newsies and Runyonesque characters - Jockey Flemming, Duchie, Louis Apple, Kid Obley. Any celebrity or government official who came to town came into Metro News. And my father collected their autographs for me until I learned to ask for them myself..

I want to write about so many fascinating people who came in and out of my life, some for a few minutes, some repeatedly through the days and years, and influenced me in small and huge ways.

Today, I have been thinking about Ronnie McKelvie and "Little Helen". Mr. McKelvie was a gentleman, probably in his sixties back in the late 1940's - early 1950's. He was a regular customer. I have no idea what he did for a living. He usually came in on a Saturday, if I remember correctly. But what I do remember clearly was how mild mannered and pleasant he was. And I remember that he often brought me - a young girl of fourteen or so at the time - a flower - a rose, a carnation.

One day, Ronnie gave me a pale black and white - almost sepia - photograph of a young girl - about twelve - standing outdoors in a rural setting with a young deer very close by. It looks like late winter. Perhaps March of the year this treasured picture was taken. The girl is wearing a skirt and sweater. This was perhaps his niece - or a friend's child. I can't recall without access to my many diaries and journals. But she was a young girl he adored. He called her "Little Helen". Perhaps it was because of his love for this little girl that Ronnie McKelvie favoured me.

That photograph is among my many albums and I long to be able to look at it again, but due to my illness and financial limitations, I live in a very small apartment and it is nearly impossible to get into my files and albums.

So, today, I commit these memories from my youth to my blog and offer this tiny gem of warm feelings to my readers around the world.

Ronnie McKelvie is gone. I know almost nothing about him apart from what I have just imparted, but he is not forgotten. He is much appreciated by this older woman who is still a girl in her heart. I can still hold his flowers in my mind.

CLIFFORD OLSON KILLED ELEVEN PEOPLE -. HE CAN ONLY DIE ONCE

A VICTIM OF CLIFFORD OLSON IS CRYING

This is a message from one of Clifford Olson's victims.
He murdered her young sister.

I wrote to let her know Clifford Olson is dying. I copy her message here verbatim, only clarifying her grammar to help the reader.

Yes, I know they called from the prison that he was going over to the prison hospital. He has been going out for the last year and a half. Now the families are waiting for that last call waiting to hear that he will soon be dead.

Today, all I can do is cry and I don't know why? Its on the news all day and radio maybe it's that.

All I know is even now they (the authorities) don't have the respect to the families because of the privacy act to tell us that he had cancer, but the media found out today and it's reporting that he may have days. Will it bring closure for me ? It will always be a life time of pain.

My mother died in January, 2010, with cancer breast lung and brain and she wasn't in the news. And she didn't get treatments, and what's more sad is - once again, he (Olson) will still benefit from that pension that's in his prison bank that's over 150.000 dollars.

Meantime the taxpayer housed him all these years. And I think the government should do the right thing here and give this to the families for the damage and pain and suffering we all went through.

My heart today is broken and I don't know why! I will always have (my sister) in my heart. but I can't explain it. I'm hurting that we really never got justice.

B.

I  wrote to B. saying I would publish her message without identifying her. Here is her answer.

I don't  care if you do. You can even send it to all the papers because I can't. I'm still crying. WHY IS THAT ? WHY?

With love B

POLITICS MAKES STRANGE BEDFELLOWS

It is said,
"Politics makes strange bedfellows". *

The truth is - politics is a filthy game played for power and land and - especially these days - Texas Tea - black gold - oil - which means -

More power !

Participants in politics all over the world, throughout time, have blood on their hands.

And still it goes on, relentlessly.

The offspring of these deals made in strange beds is rarely, I think, a sweet child full of love and generosity,

But, as history shows - more of the same.

"Politics makes strange bedfellows" - Charles Dudley Warner - September 12, 1829 – October 20, 1900) was an American essayist, novelist, and friend of Mark Twain, with whom he co-authored the novel The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today. (Wikipedia)

REPUBLICANS CRY "CLASS WARFARE"

The U.S. Republicans are crying, "Class Warfare" because President Obama is preparing to call for an increase in taxes for MILLIONAIRES.

Class Warfare? Of course,

Since the beginning of time, the strong and the devious have practiced "class warfare" against the poor and the weak.

Peasants, slaves, lackeys, indentured servants, liveried servants, labourers, cotton-pickers, people with dark skins, people with lidded eyes, people who pray differently - These have always been the victims of "class warfare".

Once in a while, someone came along who said, "No !".

They were called -

Abraham Lincoln, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Moses  ...

And then they were gone and the kings and rulers and tycoons continued to wage "class warfare" against the weak and the poor.

"Class Warfare" ? Of course. It was always so.

But remember -

Who is waging "Class Warfare" against whom.

JUSTICE BLINDFOLDED. GAGGED AND IN CHAINS - SO WHAT ELSE IS NEW ?

Why are we surprised ? Or are we ? Have we become so accustomed to corruption that we are not even listening anymore?

Anyone who dares to point the finger at power and say "Corruption !" is quickly silenced in one way or another - fired, discredited, paid off, intimidated ... sometimes - worse.

Truth is very dangerous and, in these two examples that appear on the news today, we can see how truth is suppressed again and again and again - for years.

But truth will out. All we have to do is live long enough to see it.

Quebec roadwork industry rife with corruption: report

CBC News
Posted: Sep 14, 2011 5:42 PM ET
Last Updated: Sep 14, 2011 9:06 PM ET

The report does not name companies or individuals involved with the alleged corruption. Radio-Canada

A leaked report prepared by Quebec's anti-corruption squad and obtained by the CBC describes the province's roadwork industry as rife with underground deals and tied to organized crime.

The report, obtained by the CBC's French-language service Radio-Canada, says it's routine for consulting engineering firms to inflate estimates for projects and for entrepreneurs to go over budget.

In some cases, they're the same entrepreneurs who attempt to charge the Ministry of Transportation for extras.

The ministry rarely fights those overages and, when it does, often settles out of court, the investigation found.

The report also says some of the money may end up being passed from the consulting firms on to political parties or used to pay workers under the table.

No companies or individuals are named in the report.

Premier Jean Charest did not comment on the report Wednesday.

A spokesperson from his office said it has not been reviewed yet.

Ex-Mountie raises questions about Swissair Crash

An incendiary device may have triggered the crash of Swissair Flight 111 that killed 229 passengers and crew near Peggy's Cove, N.S. 13 years ago, says a retired RCMP investigator who pursued the case.

In a stunning disclosure, Tom Juby, an RCMP arson investigator who retired in 2002, confirmed to the Star Wednesday night that a team probing the disaster uncovered evidence that may suggest there was such a device on board but senior officials with the force stymied his efforts to look at it closer.

Juby said investigators found abnormally high levels of magnesium, iron and aluminum — important ingredients in an incendiary device, in the cockpit area of the aircraft.

"There's a whole lot more and it will be coming out soon," Juby said in a telephone interview from his home in New Minas, just outside of Kentville, N.S.

CBC's The Fifth Estate will be airing a documentary on questions about the crash on Friday night.

The Swissair flight from New York to Zurich slammed into the Atlantic Ocean on Sept. 2, 1998. Among the dead were United Nations officials and a Saudi prince. The aircraft also carried hundreds of millions of dollars worth of diamonds that were never found.

Juby would not disclose any other evidence but revealed that his RCMP superiors and aviation officials didn't support his concerns about a possible explosive device and prevented him from pursuing it for years.

Investigators conducted further tests but could not find the source of those elements and stopped work after 2001, he noted.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada concluded that an electrical fault in overhead wiring caused a short circuit and sparked a fire in the cockpit which led to the crash.

If there was any suggestion of a criminal act, the board would have turned over its probe to the RCMP.

Juby, 60, told the Star he has been fighting the RCMP since 2001 over the issue of high levels of magnesium and other evidence but to no avail.

"I filed my last series of complaints in 2007 and they eventually refused to deal with them," he said.

Juby, who retired after 32 years with the force, noted he was bound by various statutes that prohibited public disclosure.

However, Juby added he has been free of those restrictions for some time and unsuccessfully attempted to gain public interest on other possible causes for the fatal crash. One reporter in Nova Scotia is currently working on a book about the disaster and questions surrounding it.

Spokespersons for RCMP and the federal safety board could not be reached for comment late Wednesday.

FIGHTING FOR JUSTICE - ANYWAY

In the late 1990's, my sister, Sheila - whose name I am not even supposed to mention - was living in a lovely suburban home with all the assets and benefits.

I was recovering from my first battle with cancer. I was widowed, homeless, unemployed and living on welfare. And I was the victim of a robbery that was tearing my life apart.

Sheila told me that she resented the fact that her husband had to pay taxes to support people like me.

And still I am fighting for her right to her share of our father's estate stolen by a stranger named Kenneth Gregoire Prud'homme, one of my niece Dawn McSweeney's "partners in crime".
