AN EYE FOR AN EYE - ANCIENT VALUES WORK AGAINST CRIME VICTIMS

Why mandatory sentencing is important: via Mark Lundsford

Mandatory minimum sentences achieve two important goals. First, they send a strong message to our communities that we will not tolerate sexual crimes, especially those perpetrated against children. Second, they help ensure that sexual predators cannot easily victimize another innocent child.

Therapy benefits for sex offenders are greatly disputed. Treatment plans known as relapse prevention have been a cornerstone of efforts to reform sex offenders for the past 20 years. Yet there is no convincing evidence that the approach works, or that others do either.

Phyllis Carter   Western society is caught up in the net of the Christian Bible with the command to forgive and to love our enemies.

The Old Testament demanded an eye for an eye - not to be cruel - but to teach fairness - justice. At that time, people had their hands cut off for stealing a loaf of bread. The Jews said that was too much. The punishment should fit the crime.

In some countries, Muslims continue to demand blood for bread, but Jews do not.

But western laws rest on the Christian New Testament. So, we forgive child molesters, rapists, thieves, kidnappers, and every other kind of criminal. The criminals have all the rights.

And the victims? The victims are to be Christ-like - and suffer.

So simple when you really think about it.
