THE PLIGHT OF WOMEN IN PAKISTAN UNDER SHARIA LAW IN THE 21st CENTURY

In many parts of Pakistan, where Sharia law influences the legal system, women accused of adultery face imprisonment or death. To avoid both, many flee to the Edhi shelter for women, a heavily guarded compound in Karachi, that provides a safe haven for women fleeing abusive homes.

Aisha came to the shelter after she was accused by her husband of having an affair. "He'd start beating me. My children would scream, 'Someone please save our mother.' No one would listen. No one would help," she said.

Though the women at the shelter are living in less than ideal conditions, they are considered to be the lucky ones for escaping domestic violence. An equal rights group in Pakistan claims more than a thousand women have been murdered for so called "honor" crimes this year alone.
