BURNED ALIVE FOR BEING GAY - HOMOSEXUALITY IS A SERIOUS CRIME IN JAMAICA

When Your Love Is Against The Law

The Abominable Crime is a story about a mother's love for her child and an activist's love for his country. It gives voice to Jamaicans who face endemic anti-gay violence and are forced to flee their homeland.

Simone, a lesbian single mother, survives an anti-gay shooting and must now choose between hiding with her daughter in constant fear for their lives or escaping alone to seek safety and asylum abroad.

Maurice, the country's leading human-rights activist, is outed shortly after filing a lawsuit challenging his country's anti-sodomy law. After receiving death threats, he escapes to Canada, and then risks everything to return to continue his work.

Told first hand, these personal accounts take the audience on an emotional journey traversing four years and five countries. Their stories expose the roots of homophobia in Jamaican society, reveal the deep psychological and social impacts of discrimination, and offer intimate first-person perspectives on the risks and challenges of seeking asylum abroad.
