HOW MANY OFFICIALS OF MONTREAL HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN CORRUPTION?

SILENCE IS THE ENEMY OF JUSTICE. When someone tells you to shut up, chances are you are saying something important- something they fear.

A few years ago a small group of citizens of the community of NDG in Montreal were appealing to the NDG/.Cote des Neiges Borough mayor, Michael Applebaum - later mayor of Montreal - to spare the Fraser-Hickson Library. Applebaum and the mayor of Montreal at the time, Gerald Tremblay, did everything they could to silence us.

Applebaum scoffed  at the petitions with hundeds of signatures. He called us "a mere splinter group" and said we didn't represent the people of the community. He insulted us, even a woman dying of cancer who appealed to him.

His friend on council, Marvin Rotrand, threatened to throw us out of the open town meetings.

Again and again, we asked Applebaum how he could justify advertising himself as a real estate agent for Royal LePage while he was head of the Zoning Commitee. Applebaum and Rotrand raged at us and did everything they could to make us shut up.

Was Mayor Robert Libman aware of what was going on with Applebaum and the real estate business? He seemed to be enjoying the events as Applebaum condemned us. We heard him comment to the man next to him - was that Applebaum's father? - that I was "a loose cannon." That did not offend me. I am proud that no one owns me.

The Fraser Hickson was taken from us and the new library promised to us by Applebaum and Rotrand way back then has never happened as far as I know. But Michael Applebaum is waiting to go on trial for corruption in Montreal this fall. Some of Applebaum's supporters on council have already pleaded guilty to charges of corruption.

If I have said anything that is inaccurate, please correct me.

Reports about this can be found on PHYLLIS CARTER'S JOURNAL via Google.
