AGONY ! AGONY ! WHO WILL STOP THIS AGONY ?

THE CANADIAN ELECTION SYSTEM

I SERVED AT ELECTIONS THROUGH THE YEARS. IN CANADA, WE SIT AT A TABLE AND COUNT THE PAPER BALLOT RESULTS BY HAND.

A REPRESENTATIVE OF EACH PARTY SITS AT EVERY TABLE. IF THERE IS A DISPUTE, WE CALL ON OUR OWN LAWYERS WHO, IF THEY ARE NOT ON THE PREMISES, ARRIVE QUICKLY TO CHECK THE BALLOTS.

EVERY BALLOT IS CHECKED AT LEAST TWICE AND IF THERE IS A DISPUTE, IT IS CHECKED AGAIN BY THE LAWYERS OF ALL THE PARTIES CONCERNED.

WE MAY BE DISSATISFIED WITH OUR PRIME MINISTER'S SHAMEFUL SUPPORT OF THE OIL COMPANIES, BUT WE DO NOT HAVE REASON TO DOUBT OUR ELECTION SYSTEM. THERE IS ONE EXCEPTION.

WHILE I WAS A CANCER PATIENT IN PALLIATIVE CARE AT THE JEWISH GENERAL HOSPITAL IN MONTREAL IN OCTOBER, 2015, I WAS NOT ALLOWED TO VOTE.

MY FAMILY HAS BEEN CANADIAN FOR MORE THAN ONE HUNDRED YEARS. WE ACTIVELY HELPED TO ELECT MINISTERS AND PRIME MINISTERS.

THERE WAS A ROOM SET UP IN THE HOSPITAL FOR THE ELECTIONS, BUT I WAS REFUSED THE RIGHT TO VOTE BECAUSE I WAS NOT CONSIDERED A "FULL TIME PATIENT". I WAS TOLD THAT I HAD TO VOTE AT THE POLLS NEAR MY HOME. THAT WOULD MEAN GETTING SPECIAL TRANSPORT AT A COST OF $60. EACH WAY AND I WOULD HAVE TO GO BY WHEELCHAIR TO THOSE POLLS AND RETURN TO MY HOSPITAL BED. SO I WAS NOT ABLE TO VOTE.

MY GOOGLE BLOGGER DASHBOARD JUST DISAPPEARED

My blogs are okay, but my Google Blogger Dashboard just disappeared a few days ago. I have tried to follow Google's many instructions online, but without success. I have reported this again and again through "feedback" but no one responds.

If you have any contacts at Google Blogger, please ask them to restore my Dashboard. I have no tech savvy and this just drains me.

Thank you.

Phyllis Carter - YOU ARE MISTAKEN. THE WORLD DOES NOT HEAR THE CRIES OF THE ANIMALS. THEIR SUFFERING IN THE THOUSANDS IS NOTICED ONLY BY A PRECIOUS FEW WHO HAVE HEARTS AND SOULS. AND WE DO HEAR YOU ALEPPO, AND WE SHARE YOUR STORIES AND PICTURES EVERY DAY. BUT WE ARE ONLY ORDINARY PEOPLE AND OUR GOVERNMENTS DO NOT LISTEN TO US.
Mohammad Robert You break my heart with this really truth, you are right and say the true

Phyllis Carter - MY HEART ACHES FOR YOUR PEOPLE. I AM SO HELPLESS. ALL I CAN DO IS SHARE YOUR REPORTS. BUT WHO IS WATCHING? WHO CARES? POLITICIANS HUNGER FOR MORE AND MORE POWER. ASSAD IS KNOWN TO THE WORLD AS A BRUTAL MASS MURDERER, AND YET PUTIN SUPPORTS HIM - AND AMERICA DOESN'T DARE TO ACT BECAUSE WHENEVER AMERICA STEPS IN, EVIL ALSO STEPS IN THROUGH THE OPEN DOOR AND IT POISONS THE SITUATION. AND THEN THOSE WHO TRY TO HELP ARE BLAMED. NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED. WHAT CAN WE DO? THIS IS ANOTHER HOLOCAUST. PEOPLE HAVE FORGOTTEN HITLER - AND RWANDA WHEN THE WORLD DIDN'T WANT TO KNOW. IN RECENT DAYS, WE HAVE SEEN THAT AMERICA HAS A HUGE FASCIST COMPONENT. THE ENEMY IS WITHIN. AND THOSE WHO DARE TO SPEAK OUT AGAINST IT ARE NOW AT RISK. I LOOK TO THE HILLS. WE HAVE WAITED YEARS FOR THE TRIAL OF MICHAEL APPLEBAUM

"I did what Michael Applebaum said to do."He said it was his job to collect the kickbacks — tens of thousands of dollars' worth — and divide the cash according to Applebaum's instructions.

Years later, after Applebaum had climbed the political ladder to the Montreal mayor's office, Tremblay said he received a call from investigators.

'In order to charge you, [they] got to see the money,' ex-mayor Michael Applebaum says in recording.

The court heard that after some initial resistance, the former aide eventually agreed to help police with their investigation.

Under cross-examination, Tremblay admitted that he used the extra cash for extravagant vacations. He also admitted to using cocaine two or three times a year.

"Did I go out more often when I became single at 30 with a stack of cash? Yes," he said.

Defence lawyer Pierre Teasdale also suggested, through his line of questioning, that Tremblay had something to gain by co-operating with police.

"You, in your mind, did you have reasonable expectations … after everything you did for police, that they would try to charge you?" Teasdale asked in court.

"Reasonably, no,"  Tremblay answered.

Tremblay has never been charged in this case.

Robert Stein: The 'sucker'

Robert Stein

Robert Stein took over his family's real estate management business at age 24, after his father died. He said he was extorted and sucked into a world of corruption. (Radio-Canada)

When Robert Stein was 24 years old, his father died and he was left in charge of the family's real estate management business, the court heard.

Stein testified that he wanted to rebuild his family's reputation after his father's legacy was tarnished by his involvement in investments with Tony Magi, a Montreal businessman with known links to organized crime.

But Stein said he was sucked into the world of corruption.

"I was bullied, extorted," he testified.

He compared his first sit-down meeting with Applebaum to an episode of the Sopranos.

Stein said Applebaum told him "elections aren't cheap" and asked if he'd be willing to buy tickets to a political fundraiser.

"Every single person has their hand out, on one project, on this first project I've ever developed," he said. The court heard that Stein ended up paying a total of $60,000 to bureaucrats, including Applebaum's right-hand man Tremblay, to ensure he'd get approved for a real estate development on de Troie Avenue. The project was never completed.

Talk with ex-mayor Michael Applebaum felt like Sopranos episode, court hears.

Stein said he gave the cash to his business partner, Anthony Keeler, who delivered it to the right people.

He said Keeler, who was like a mentor, once spent some of the kickback cash on his own lifestyle, so Stein had to pay him twice.

When the defence attorney asked Stein why he never made Keeler repay him, Stein answered:

"I'm a sucker … I don't like confrontation."

Tony Keeler: The mentor with a code

Anthony Keeler

Retired mortgage consultant Anthony Keeler told the court that when anti-corruption investigators knocked on his door in the spring of 2013, he knew 'the jig is up.' (Radio-Canada)

Retired mortgage consultant Anthony Keeler said Stein, whom he called Robbie, was "like my son."

He said that when anti-corruption investigators came knocking on his door, he could tell the jig was up.

"The minute they left, I called Robbie, I said, 'Puts your pants on, come over' … I told him, 'You gotta get a lawyer.'"

"We had a code, I guess you'd call it," Keeler testified.Keeler explained to the court how he used to arrange cash drop-offs with Tremblay.

"He'd call and say, 'Can we have lunch tomorrow?' and if I had the money, I would say yes."

He told the court that in exchange for a promise of roughly $35,000 in kickbacks, his real estate project was approved by the zoning committee.

Final witness never saw Applebaum receive cash
He admitted, however, that he never saw the cash actually being handed to Applebaum.

Patrice Laporte: The engineer with envelopes of cash

Patrice Laporte
Engineer Patrice Laporte told the court he handed over envelopes of cash to Michael Applebaum's right-hand man, Hugo Tremblay, in Starbucks cafés and McDonald's restaurants. (Radio-Canada)

Engineer Patrice Laporte told the Quebec court how he ferried thousands of dollars in cash to pay off Applebaum's right-hand man, to guarantee his firm would win a municipal contract.

Laporte, a former executive at SOGEP - a subsidiary of the Montreal-based engineering firm Dessau - said his firm made a bid for the management and maintenance contract for the NDG Sports Centre in 2010.

Cash-stuffed envelopes traded for NDG Sports Centre contract, engineer testifies.

A few weeks later, he said, Tremblay phoned him and said if they didn't offer some extra cash, they could lose the contract.

"We were a bit discouraged," Laporte said.

'We'd grab a coffee, we'd chat.… Then I'd pass him an envelope.'
- Patrice Laporte, engineer.

He told the court his boss decided they would pay $25,000 extra in exchange for the contract, which was worth more than $1 million a year.

Laporte said he met Tremblay several times at Starbucks cafés and McDonald's restaurants to exchange the cash.

"We'd grab a coffee, we'd chat.… Then I'd pass him an envelope," Laporte said.

During the defence lawyer's cross-examination, Laporte clarified that he never collaborated directly with Applebaum.

"Me, I had nothing to do with Mr. Applebaum," he testified.

IN DEPTH | 'No paper trail' in Michael Applebaum's corruption trial means focus is on key witness's testimony.

Applebaum declined to testify in his own defence.

His lawyer is expected to make his closing arguments on Monday.

The people of NDG have waited a long time for Michael Applebaum's trial.

MICHAEL APPLEBAUM - WE ARE WITNESSES TO HIS HISTORY

While Michael Applebaum was mayor of the Borough of NDG.CDN, citizens confronted him accusing him of conflict of interest. He was head of the zoning committee while also advertising himself as a real estate agent for Royal LePage. Applebaum and his friend Marvin Rotrand were outraged that we dared to question him. We were threatened. Rotrand said he would throw us out of the (public) meeting. I wonder what role Marvin Rotrand may have played in Michael's "business". Solly Zajdel and Montreal Mayor Gerald Tremblay's brother also supported Michael against us.

WHERE'S THE LOVE ? THE BLACK-EYED PEAS AND THE WORLD

What's wrong with the world, mama
People livin' like they ain't got no mamas
I think the whole world addicted to the drama
Only attracted to things that'll bring you trauma

Overseas, yeah, we try to stop terrorism
But we still got terrorists here livin'
In the USA, the big CIA
The Bloods and The Crips and the KKK

But if you only have love for your own race
Then you only leave space to discriminate
And to discriminate only generates hate
And when you hate then you're bound to get irate, yeah

Madness is what you demonstrate
And that's exactly how anger works and operates
Man, you gotta have love just to set it straight
Take control of your mind and meditate
Let your soul gravitate to the love, y'all, y'all

People killin', people dyin'
Children hurt and you hear them cryin'
Can you practice what you preach?
Or would you turn the other cheek?

Father, Father, Father help us
Send some guidance from above
'Cause people got me, got me questionin'
Where is the love (Love)

Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love, the love, the love

It just ain't the same, old ways have changed
New days are strange, is the world insane?
If love and peace are so strong
Why are there pieces of love that don't belong?

Nations droppin' bombs
Chemical gasses fillin' lungs of little ones
With ongoin' sufferin' as the youth die young
So ask yourself is the lovin' really gone

So I could ask myself really what is goin' wrong
In this world that we livin' in people keep on givin' in
Makin' wrong decisions, only visions of them dividends
Not respectin' each other, deny thy brother
A war is goin' on but the reason's undercover

The truth is kept secret, it's swept under the rug
If you never know truth then you never know love
Where's the love, y'all, come on (I don't know)
Where's the truth, y'all, come on (I don't know)
Where's the love, y'all

People killin', people dyin'
Children hurt and you hear them cryin'
Can you practice what you preach?
Or would you turn the other cheek?

Father, Father, Father help us
Send some guidance from above
'Cause people got me, got me questionin'
Where is the love (Love)

Where is the love (The love)?
Where is the love (The love)?
Where is the love (The love)?

Where is the love, the love, the love?

I feel the weight of the world on my shoulder
As I'm gettin' older, y'all, people gets colder
Most of us only care about money makin'
Selfishness got us followin' the wrong direction

Wrong information always shown by the media
Negative images is the main criteria
Infecting the young minds faster than bacteria
Kids wanna act like what they see in the cinema

Yo', whatever happened to the values of humanity
Whatever happened to the fairness and equality
Instead of spreading love we're spreading animosity
Lack of understanding, leading us away from unity

That's the reason why sometimes I'm feelin' under
That's the reason why sometimes I'm feelin' down
There's no wonder why sometimes I'm feelin' under
Gotta keep my faith alive 'til love is found
Now ask yourself

Where is the love?
Where is the love?

Father, Father, Father, help us
Send some guidance from above
'Cause people got me, got me questionin'
Where is the love?

Sing with me y'all:
One world, one world (We only got)
One world, one world (That's all we got)
One world, one world
And something's wrong with it (Yeah)
Something's wrong with it (Yeah)
Something's wrong with the wo-wo-world, yeah
We only got
(One world, one world)
That's all we got
(One world, one world)

THE TRIAL OF MONTREAL MAYOR MICHAEL APPLEBAUM

A Quebec court has learned the defence will not be presenting any evidence in the Michael Applebaum corruption trial, and the former Montreal mayor will not be testifying.

Applebaum is accused of breach of trust, conspiracy and two forms of corruption: municipal corruption and fraud on the government.

All the charges date back to his time as borough mayor of Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce and relate to an alleged strategy of asking for bribes in exchange for bureaucratic favours.

Applebaum has always maintained his innocence.

On the seventh day of the trial, the prosecution rested its case after hearing testimony from its final witness.

Defence lawyer Pierre Teasdale informed the court he would not be calling any witnesses to testify. His final arguments will be based on the evidence already before the court.

Prosecutor Nathalie Kleber is expected to make her closing arguments on Friday, followed by Teasdale on Monday.

Final witness never saw Applebaum receive cash.

The final witness called by the prosecution was retired mortgage consultant Anthony Keeler.

He told the court that in exchange for a promise of roughly $35,000 in kickbacks, former mayor Michael Applebaum ensured a zoning committee would approve his real estate project on de Troie Avenue in Montreal.

"He sold it to the committee," Keeler said, referring to the borough's zoning committee.

But under cross-examination, he admitted that he never saw the cash actually being handed to Applebaum.

The court has heard how Keeler and his business partner Robert Stein agreed to pay between $30,000 and $35,000 to ensure their plans for a condominium development would be approved by the borough.

Keeler told the court that Applebaum's right-hand man, Hugo Tremblay, initially asked him for a much higher amount, between $100,000 and $50,000 in cash, in exchange for their help.

'He'd call and say, 'Can we have lunch tomorrow?' and if I had the money, I would say yes.'

- Anthony Keeler, retired mortgage consultant

"He said, 'Michael will have to work hard on it,'" Keeler testified.

After Keeler negotiated the total sum down to around $35,000, he said he and Tremblay agreed to meet three or four times at the Brûlerie St-Denis on Côte-des-Neiges Road for the cash transactions.

"We had a code, I guess you'd call it," Keeler told the court.
"He'd call and say, 'Can we have lunch tomorrow?' and if I had the money, I would say yes."

Crown witness Robert Stein said he felt like he had to pay thousands of dollars in kickbacks to bureaucrats if he wanted to succeed as a real estate manager in Montreal's Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough. (Radio-Canada)

Keeler's business partner felt 'bullied, extorted'

Keeler's testimony followed that of his former business partner, real estate manager Robert Stein.

During his testimony, Stein called himself "a sucker" and a victim of extortion.

He portrayed himself as a naive, young entrepreneur in his 20s in 2006, when he took over the family business in the wake of his father's death.
"I was bullied, extorted. I had no support from anyone around me," he testified on Monday.

"Every single person has their hand out, on one project, on this first project I've ever developed," he said, referring to his condominium development on Montreal's de Troie Avenue, which was never completed.
But during cross-examination, defence lawyer Pierre Teasdale questioned Stein's naiveté.

Teasdale asked about Stein's father and his relationship with Tony Magi, a Montreal businessman with known links to organized crime.
"My father, I think, for many years had a good reputation. That reputation, I believe, was tarnished by his business association with Mr. Magi," Stein said.

Stein explained that Magi had offices in the same building as his father.
He said that despite his efforts to re-establish the family name after his father's death, Stein felt he was sucked into the world of corruption.
He said when bureaucrats, including Applebaum's right-hand man, asked for tens of thousands of dollars to approve his project, he felt like he didn't have much of a choice if he wanted to succeed in the real estate business.

Stein turns police informant

This week's testimony focused on the proposed Projet Troie development, one of two key projects under scrutiny in the trial. The other is a municipal contract for the management and maintenance of the NDG Sports Centre.

Ex-Montreal mayor justified illegal financing to aide, court hears
'I realized … Michael Applebaum was open to corruption,' former aide testifies

Stein told the court that eventually, in 2012, he went to police and agreed to tell his whole story as an anonymous informant.

He said it was months later that Applebaum was arrested and resigned as mayor of Montreal.

'The jig is up'

In court on Tuesday, Keeler recalled the morning anti-corruption investigators knocked on his door at 6:30 a.m. in the spring of 2013.
"I was still in my boxers, sleeping wear," he testified.

Keeler said he'd been following the Charbonneau corruption inquiry and wasn't surprised to see police on his doorstep.

"They had the look and the attitude of 'the jig is up,'" he said.

He told the court that he later agreed to work with police, but only after he was assured that Stein would be protected as well.

"The minute they left I called Robbie, I said, 'Put your pants on, come over.'"
