THE ST. LOUIS - CANADA SENT JEWISH REFUGEES BACK TO HITLER

They needed Canada's help and Canada said no.

It was 1939 and 907 Jewish refugees aboard the German transatlantic liner St. Louis were seeking sanctuary from Nazi Germany. Canada refused to take them in and the ship sailed back to Europe, where 254 would later die in concentration camps.

A display now on at the Museum of Industry in Stellarton tells the sad tale of the St. Louis and its ill-fated passengers.

Although the story does not put Canada in a good light, it's one that should be told, Debra McNabb, the museum's director, said Thursday.

"It's the job of a museum not to censor history," said McNabb.

"We must not just tell the stories we're comfortable with hearing. We must tell both the light and the dark."

And the story of the St. Louis is so dark.

The St. Louis: Ship of Fate panels in the museum show photos of German Jewish families holding one another and smiling as the luxury liner turns its stern to a nation descending into hate and sails off across the Atlantic.

The panels tell of how at mid-crossing, first Cuba, then neighbouring Caribbean countries and finally the United States closes their ports to the refugees. And they tell of how Canada also rejected taking in the refugees, forcing the St. Louis to head back to Europe, despite having come within a two-day steam of Halifax.

And the panels should raise a question for us all about what it is to be human.

"Would I have behaved any different, have said to let them in, had I been alive at the time?" Gerry Lunn, curator of exhibits at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, said earlier this week.

"It would be self-deceiving to claim to know. My sense of values and how they have been guided are a product of a different time and different experiences.

"For anyone working at a museum when presenting a historic story, they have to answer the question: So what? How is this relevant to me?" said Lunn.

"Within the exhibit we're hoping that people see there are all kinds of shading to individuals … good, bad and many areas of grey."

Then-prime minister William Lyon Mackenzie King would fit into the grey area.

In researching for the exhibit, Maritime museum staff unearthed the correspondence of King with his then-immigration minister Frederick Blair.

With the St. Louis heading back toward Europe, but still within reach of Halifax, University of Toronto history professor George Wrong led a group of prominent clergy and academics in petitioning King to grant sanctuary to the refugees on humanitarian grounds.

King, who was travelling in the United States at the time, wrote to Blair, advising that he "strongly consider this request."

But Blair, remembered by history for his race-based immigration policies that saw Canada only accept 5,000 Jewish immigrants (compared to 200,000 by the United States) during the 1930s and '40s, fought the move.

"Much to our shame, King, who had many Jewish friends, didn't force the matter," said Lunn.

And Blair didn't act alone. He was aided by public servants in Ottawa and the widespread anti-Semitism in Canada during the 1930s.

"Part of the concern in Nova Scotia was that coming out of the Depression or the waves of recessions this province had experienced, … a wave of immigration coming in would have been frightening to some people, concerned for the few jobs that were available," said McNabb.

But one place anti-Semitism wasn't found was in the mind and deeds of the non-Jewish German captain of the St. Louis.

Capt. Gustav Shroeder argued first with the Cuban authorities, then those of neighbouring Caribbean countries and finally with American authorities to let the refugees land. Notably, he seemed to have given up on Canada and there isn't a record of his lobbying our country.

Steaming back toward Europe, he promised his passengers he wouldn't return them to Nazi Germany and hatched a desperate plan to run his ship aground on the English coast if no safe port could be found.

At the last moment, Belgium, France, the Netherlands and Great Britain accepted the refugees and the boat landed its human cargo in Antwerp, Belgium.

That country, France and the Netherlands were soon over-run by Nazi Germany and 254 of the passengers were sent off to die in concentration camps.

The value in history, said Lunn, is not just to know what happened in the past but to inform the decisions of the present and future.

"Goodness knows, boatloads of people still show up on our shores," said Lunn.

As for Capt. Shroeder, he managed to sail around a British blockade when war was declared and eventually made it home to Germany.

The sympathy he showed his Jewish passengers was noted by Nazi authorities and he lost command of his ship and was put on a desk job.

But with the end of the Second World War, it was the surviving Jewish passengers who sent him money and food so he could survive in a Germany that was destroyed. In 1957, two years before his death, the German government awarded him a medal for his services to those same passengers.

THE DEMISE OF AMERICA

Robert Reich
Here's the list of predominantly Muslim countries in the Middle East covered by Trump's order: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Yemen.
Here's the list of predominantly Muslim countries where the Trump Organization has done business: Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Azerbaijan. (I'm told that at this moment, one of Trump's sons is in the United Arab Emirates negotiating a new hotel.)
Obviously, the places where the Trump Organization has done business are exempted from Trump's ban.
Isn't this grounds for impeachment? Or at least the start of an impeachment hearing?
What do you think?

WARNING SIGNS OF FASCISM

DONALD TRUMP'S GERMAN IMMIGRANT FAMILY - HE WAS ALWAYS A LIAR.

Distant relatives of Donald Trump still live in the sleepy German village where his grandfather was born, but locals describe the anti-immigrant presidential hopeful as 'spooky'.

Kallstadt is a village with a population of just 1,200 people and where stuffed pork belly is the local dish - is the ancestral home of the Trumps.

Kallstadt is home to just 1,200 people, but numerous people claim to be distant relatives of Donald Trump.

The Donald's grandfather Friedrich Drumpf left Kallstadt in western Germany in 1885 and arrived in New York when he was 16.

Bernd Weisenborn, a local restaurant owner, said: 'My father is Donald Trump's third cousin, but we don't talk much about the Trumps in the family.'

Many feel it is ironic that Trump, who has made himself notorious both in America and around the world with his anti-immigrant rhetoric, should himself be the offspring of immigrants.

'If his grandfather had been treated the way Trump wants to treat immigrants, he would never have made it,' said Veronika Schramm, a local.

Friedrich was 16 when he arrived in New York and began working as a barber. He later managed a hotel in California, before opening a bar for gold prospectors in Yukon, Canada.

Friedrich returned to Kallstadt to marry his sweetheart Elisabeth Christ, who lived across the street from him when he was growing up.

The local history books record how Bavaria, the rulers of the town at the time, would not let him settle back in the town because he had forfeited citizenship by emigrating.

Picturesque: Many people feel it is ironic that Trump is the offspring of immigrants, considering his anti-immigrant rhetoric.

Still standing: Trump's grandfather's house remains in the village with a sign at the gate reading: 'God sees everything, but my neighbour sees even more'

WHO WAS DONALD TRUMP'S GRANDFATHER FRIEDRICH DRUMPF?

Donald Trump's paternal grandfather was Fred Trump - originally called Friedrich Drumpf and born in Kallstadt, Germany in 1869 - came to America at the age of 16 with empty pockets.

After Fred arrived in New York City, he worked as a barber for six years and lived in tiny immigrant apartments with his sister and brother-in-law before venturing west to Seattle.

It was there that he launched his first business, a late-night restaurant in the sleazy end of the town. He learned to navigate the district's saloons, opium parlours, pawn shops and brothels.

Next he got his first taste of the phenomenon that was mining, setting up shop in the short-lived mining town of Monte Cristo, just north of the city.
In July 1897, as word of a massive gold strike in the far north spread through Seattle, Fred took advantage, opening another restaurant catering to the thousands of stampeders who were chasing their fortunes.

He then had enough money to travel to Germany and then returned to New York City with his wife. In 1905, his son Fred Junior, Donald's father, was born.

By the time he died in Queens at the age of 49, during a Spanish flu epidemic, he had built up a fortune worth $31,642.54 - or around $542,000 in today's money.

He left his small fortune to his wife Elisabeth, who used it to go into business with her eldest son Fred Junior, who was just 15 at the time.
The pair created the Trump empire, which is now headed by Fred Junior's entrepreneurial son, Donald.

Elisabeth went with him back to America and after he died, founded the E. Trump & Son company, which would become the property empire inherited by and built upon by Donald.

'Kallstadt people were never barons, real-estate magnates and all that,' said Hans-Joachim Bender, a retired winegrower who also claims distant familial links with The Donald.

'He was packing things into bottles and selling it, just as the winegrowers do.'

Ms Wendel, who in 2014 made a documentary about the town and its links to the mogul, said: 'Many locals find Mr Trump a little…spooky.'

Donald Trump claimed in his 1987 autobiography that his grandfather came from Sweden, not Germany.

Ms Wendel told the Wall Street Journal that most people don't really 'get' Trump, adding: 'Knowledge of the connection is so ingrained locally that it's almost like something you'd get in your breast milk, but people still care little.

'Many don't get what you're supposed to do all day with real estate.'
What is baffling to many Kallstadters is that Trump claimed that his grandfather came from Sweden, not Germany. He stated it in his 1987 autobiography, 'The Art of the Deal.'

Gwenda Blair, the author of several Trump biographies, said 'there is no possible way he could not know' his grandparents were German. 'His grandmother spoke German.'

'He's full of hot air,' one sales woman at a local butcher shop told Der Spiegel.

MONTREAL MAYOR, MICHAEL APPLEBAUM FOUND GUILTY

THE "NDG SPLINTERS" ARE WITNESSES WHO WERE NEVER CALLED

Former Montreal mayor Michael Applebaum arrives at court in Montreal, Thursday, Jan.26, 2017.
THE CANADIAN PRESS/Paul ChiassonFormer Montreal mayor Michael Applebaum arrives at court in Montreal, Thursday, Jan.26, 2017.

Former Montreal mayor Michael Applebaum was found guilty of eight of the 14 charges that were levelled against him Thursday afternoon in connection with two bribery schemes that saw roughly $60,000 extorted from developers seeking contracts.
The lengthy judgment read by the justice was interrupted 90 minutes in when Applebaum fainted, soon after her ruling appeared to indicate a negative outcome for the former mayor.
Judge Louise Provost of Quebec Court found Applebaum guilty of fraud against the government, breach of trust, conspiracy and corruption in municipal affairs. A stay of proceedings was ordered for four charges, and he was found not guilty on two others.
Sentencing arguments have been set for Feb. 15.
During the trial, prosecutor Nathalie Kleber said Applebaum could be sentenced to up to five years in prison if found guilty on all charges.
In her ruling, Provost said she found the testimony of the chief witness in the case, Applebaum's former political aide and chief of staff Hugo Tremblay, compelling and credible. The testimony of the other principal witnesses corroborated Tremblay's testimony, as well as each others, Provost said during the rendering of her judgment.
Applebaum was accused of extorting roughly $60,000 in bribes from business developers between 2006 and 2012 while he was borough mayor of Côte-des-Neiges—Notre-Dame-de-Grâce.
Applebaum was arrested in June 2013 by Quebec's anti-corruption police force — known as UPAC — putting an end to his seven-month tenure as interim-mayor of Montreal. He maintained his innocence throughout, and opted to be tried by judge alone.
During his trial in November, the prosecution charged that Applebaum extracted $35,000 in bribes from businessmen Anthony Keeler and Robert Stein in 2007 in exchange for ensuring that their Côte-des-Neiges real-estate development plan would go through.

Hugo Tremblay, who served as Applebaum's political aide and then chief of staff, testified that Applebaum coached him on how to ask for and collect money.
Tremblay's testimony was corroborated by Stein and Keeler, although they noted that they never discussed or dealt directly with Applebaum when it came to illicit affairs, only Tremblay.
Tremblay also testified he and Applebaum colluded to extort $25,000 from businessmen with the firm SOGEP in exchange for ensuring the company would win a multi-year, multi-million-dollar sports centre maintenance contract. His testimony was corroborated by executives at SOGEP, who also said they never dealt with Applebaum directly when it came to bribes. Applebaum never took the stand.
Applebaum's defence lawyer, Pierre Teasdale, argued that Tremblay was the only witness to directly link Applebaum to the crimes. He stressed that Tremblay and all the other witnesses were testifying in exchange for immunity for their admitted crimes, bringing the credibility of their testimony into doubt. He focussed on the lengthy relationship Tremblay forged with the police investigators working on the case via hundreds of text messages, phone calls and emails, arguing that Tremblay felt obliged to aid police in their quest to find his former boss guilty.
Applebaum should not be found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt on the testimony of a single unreliable witness, Teasdale argued.

AT LAST WE ARE VINDICATED - MICHAEL APPLEBAUM FOUND GUILTY

Montreal Mayor, Michael Applebaum, scorned us, mocked us, dismissed us as a "mere splinter group" who didn't represent anyone. We were threatened and insulted.

The NDG SPLINTERS who fought Michael to try to save the Fraser-Hickson Library - and dared to question his activities as he was working for Royal LePage Realtors while he was the head of the NDG/CDN zoning Commission - have waited many years to see Applebaum finally held responsible for his crimes.

Applebaum has been found guilty of 8 of the 14 charges and could face up to 5 years in prison.  His lawyers have 3 days to appeal - and I am sure they will do so, again and again.

Apparently Michael collapsed and the process had to stop while he gathered himself together.

He thought he was untouchable - just as Trump does now.

Perhaps there will be justice after all.

APOCALYPSE - TRUMP CAN LAUNCH A NUCLEAR MISSILE IN FOUR MINUTES

Nuclear explosion in an outdoor setting.

We are creeping closer to the apocalypse, according to a panel of scientists and scholars. Scientists has moved the 'Doomsday Clock,' a symbolic countdown to the end of the world, to two and a half minutes to midnight. USA TODAY

Scientists moved the hands of the Doomsday Clock closer to midnight on Thursday amid increasing worries over nuclear weapons and climate change.

Each year, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, a nonprofit that sets the clock, decides whether the events of the previous year pushed humanity closer or further from destruction. The symbolic clock is now two-and-a-half minutes from midnight, the closest it's been to midnight since 1953, when the hydrogen bomb was first tested.  Scientists blamed a cocktail of threats ranging from dangerous political rhetoric to the potential of nuclear threat as the catalyst for moving the clock closer towards doomsday.

"This year's Clock deliberations felt more urgent than usual…as trusted sources of information came under attack, fake news was on the rise, and words were used by a President-elect of the United States in cavalier and often reckless ways to address the twin threats of nuclear weapons and climate change," Rachel Bronson, the executive director and publisher of Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, said in a statement.

While many threats played into the decision to move the clock 30 seconds forward from where it was in 2016, one person in particular prompted the scientists to act.
"Never before has the Bulletin decided to advance the clock largely because of the statements of a single person. But when that person is the new president of the United States, his words matter," David Titley and Lawrence M. Krauss of the Bulletin wrote in an New York Times op-ed.

The Bulletin pointed to President Donald Trump's  careless rhetoric on nuclear weapons and other issues as well as his troubling stance on climate change.

"Current political situation in the U.S. is of particular concern," Titley of the Bulletin Science and Security Board said. "The Trump administration needs to state clearly, unequivocally it accepts climate change caused by human activity…There are no alternative facts here."

Last year, the clock remained at three minutes from midnight. It was moved to three minutes in 2015 where it was previously at five minutes to midnight.
Manhattan Project scientists, concerned about the first atomic weapons, founded the nonprofit Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists in 1945. They created the clock two years later, and update its minute hand each year.

According to the group, the clock "conveys how close we are to destroying our civilization with dangerous technologies of our own making."

The threat of nuclear warfare plays heavily into the time on the clock, as do the dangers of climate change the threat from cyber technology, according to the group's website.

The decision is made by the board of the nonprofit Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists'  along with input from a board of sponsors which includes 15 Nobel Laureates, according to the group.

If you're lucky enough, and rich enough, a new style of bunker is being built, and let's just say you won't be suffering from any lack of accommodations.
