REMEMBERING A KIND MAN, BEN "SPEED" SPIEGELMAN

This isn't the first time Montreal has faced major flooding.
More than 100 millimetres of rain fell in less than three hours during a rain storm on July 14, 1987. The Décarie Expressway and many other roadways were flooded.

MY FATHER'S COUSIN, BEN SPIEGELMAN, DIED IN THAT FLOOD.

BECAUSE OF THE BAD WEATHER, HE DECIDED TO TAKE HIS EMPLOYEES HOME. HE WENT OUT OF HIS WAY, DOWN INTO THE DECARIE EXPRESSWAY, IN ORDER TO GET TO THEIR HOME. HIS CAR WAS CAUGHT IN THE FLOOD.

BEN'S EMPLOYEES WERE RESCUED, BUT HE SUFFERED A HEART ATTACK AND DIED.

IRONICALLY, BEN - KNOWN AS "SPEED" - WAS A CHAMPION SWIMMER WHEN HE WAS YOUNG. HE WAS A LOVELY PERSON.

SUCH A TRAGEDY.
