79 years ago today the Holocaust began with a Nazi campaign of terror against Jews in Germany and Austria.

On November 7, 1938, German diplomat Ernst vom Rath was shot outside the German embassy in Paris by Herschel Grynszpan, who wanted revenge for his parents' sudden deportation from Germany to Poland.

2 days later Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels ordered storm troopers to carry out violent riots disguised as "spontaneous demonstrations" against Jews. Police and fire departments were told not to interfere.

The violence was later dubbed "Kristallnacht," or "Night of Broken Glass," after the countless smashed windows. 100 Jews were killed, 10,000 Jewish businesses, synagogues, homes, schools and graveyards destroyed. In the face of all the devastation, entire Jewish families committed suicide.

30,000 Jewish men were arrested, sent to concentration camps and released when they promised to leave Germany. Hitler's campaign to purge Germany -- and later much of Europe -- of its Jews had begun.
